Archival Overview

Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender, four-time Stanley Cup champion who held the NHL record for career shutouts (103) for nearly four decades.

Biographical Record

Terrance Gordon 'Terry' Sawchuk (1929–1970) is widely considered one of the greatest goaltenders to ever guard a hockey net. Renowned for his revolutionary low crouch stance and razor-sharp reflexes, Sawchuk endured immense physical trauma over 21 seasons, receiving hundreds of stitches across his face and body.

Sawchuk won four Stanley Cups (three with Detroit, one with Toronto) and four Vezina Trophies. His 103 career shutouts stood as an all-time NHL record until 2009. He died in 1970 following a tragic domestic accident with a teammate.
