Archival Overview
Celebrated American singer-songwriter and guitarist whose distinctive synthesis of folk, jazz, soul, and gospel produced critically acclaimed 1970s albums and a remarkable British acid jazz rediscovery in the 1990s.
Biographical Record
Childhood friend of Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler in Chicago's Cabrini-Green homes, Callier combined classical vocal training with finger-picking acoustic guitar. After recording his folk-blues debut 'The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier' in 1964, he signed with Cadet Records, releasing a trilogy of masterworks: 'Occasional Rain', 'What Color Is Love', and 'I Just Can't Help Myself'.
Retiring from music in the 1980s to work as a computer programmer and raise his daughter, Callier was astonished in the early 1990s when British DJs rediscovered his vinyl records on the acid jazz club scene. He returned to international touring and recording, collaborating with Beth Orton, Massive Attack, and Paul Weller to widespread critical acclaim.
