Archival Overview
Foundational Costa Rican modernist architect and landscape painter who immortalized the vibrant adobe churches, colonial roofs, and rolling mountains of the Central Valley.
Biographical Record
Teodorico 'Quico' Quirós was born in San José on August 28, 1897. Trained in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he returned to Costa Rica to design landmark structures including the Church of San Isidro de Coronado and the Curia Metropolitana.
As a painter, Quirós formed the famous 'Círculo de Amigos del Arte' with Francisco Amighetti and Fausto Pacheco, wandering the highlands with his easel to capture the bright clay tiles, sunlit adobe walls, and sweeping green valleys of Costa Rica in vivid post-impressionist canvases.
