Archival Overview

Shawnee spiritual leader and brother of Tecumseh. After falling into a death-like coma in 1805, he awakened with visionary teachings calling for total indigenous spiritual purification, resistance to alcohol, and pan-tribal unity.

Biographical Record

Originally named Lalawethika, his mystical awakening at Greenville, Ohio, led him to assume the name Tenskwatawa ("The Open Door"). He accurate predicted the total solar eclipse of June 16, 1806, electrifying thousands of warriors across dozens of Great Lakes and Midwestern tribes.

Co-founding Prophetstown at the junction of the Tippecanoe and Wabash rivers, his movement provided the spiritual foundation for Tecumseh's confederacy before being dispersed in 1811.
