Biographical Record
Tayeb El Okbi spent his youth in the Hijaz where he edited the official Mecca gazette Al-Qibla before returning to Biskra in 1920. Moving to Algiers, he led the Nadi al-Taraqqi (Progress Club), drawing thousands to his fiery reformist lectures against superstition and colonial fatalism.
Wrongfully implicated and imprisoned in 1936 by colonial authorities for the murder of the pro-French Mufti Kahoul, his acquittal turned into a massive popular triumph for the Algerian civil rights movement.
