Biographical Record
Supported by her widowed mother and nationalist leader Tahar Haddad, Tawhida Ben Cheikh graduated as valedictorian from Lycée Armand Fallières in 1928 before traveling to Paris, graduating with her medical doctorate in 1936. Returning to Tunis, she opened a private pediatric clinic in the Medina.
She directed the maternity ward of Charles Nicolle Hospital and founded the first family planning and reproductive health clinic in the Arab world, training thousands of midwives. In 2020, the Central Bank of Tunisia honored her by placing her portrait on the national 10-dinar banknote, making her the first woman featured on a modern Arab currency banknote.
