Archival Overview
Beloved Palestinian resistance poet and Mayor of Nazareth whose iconic poem 'Here We Shall Stay' inspired the 1976 Land Day strike.
Biographical Record
Tawfiq Amin Ziad was born in Nazareth and studied Russian literature in Moscow before emerging as a stalwart leader of the Communist Party (Rakah) and the Arab community inside Israel. Elected to the Knesset in 1973, he was elected Mayor of Nazareth in 1975, transforming the city into a bastion of Palestinian cultural and political defiance.
Ziad was a principal architect of the historic March 30, 1976 Land Day general strike, standing with demonstrators against land confiscation. His passionate resistance poems, especially 'Unadikum' (I Call Upon You) and 'Huna Baqun' (Here We Shall Stay), became legendary anthems of indigenous steadfastness (sumud). He died in a car crash in 1994 while returning from Jericho.
