Archival Overview
Sixth Almoravid Sultan, brilliant victor over Castilian forces in Andalusia, who led a heroic five-year war to defend the empire against Almohad founder Abd al-Mu'min.
Biographical Record
Tashfin ibn Ali was the son of Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf. Serving as governor of Granada and Cordoba in the 1130s, he won celebrated victories against Christian crusader armies, earning a reputation as the finest military mind in the Almoravid royal family.
Ascending the throne in 1143 amidst the explosive Almohad tribal insurgency in the Atlas mountains, Tashfin took personal command of the army. Trapped against the coastal cliffs of Oran while waiting for naval transports on March 23, 1145, his horse slipped over a precipice in the darkness, bringing a tragic end to a gallant warrior-king.
