Archival Overview
One of Norway's greatest 20th-century authors, writing in Nynorsk, famed for lyrical, psychologically haunting modernist classics such as Fuglane (The Birds) and Is-slottet (The Ice Palace).
Biographical Record
Tarjei Vesaas was born on August 20, 1897, in Vinje, Telemark. Refusing to take over his family farm Midtbø, he dedicated his life to creative literature, establishing a quiet home with his wife, poet Halldis Moren Vesaas.
Vesaas wrote in rich, evocative Nynorsk prose marked by psychological sensitivity and allegorical mystery. His masterpiece Fuglane (The Birds, 1957) portrays the gentle, mentally fragile Mattis with unforgettable empathy. In Is-slottet (The Ice Palace, 1963), which won the Nordic Council Literature Prize, he created an enduring symbol of adolescent grief and awakening. Three times nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, Vesaas remains a towering figure of Nordic modernism.
