Tariq ibn Ziyad (c. 670–720 CE), serving under Musa ibn Nusayr, crossed the Mediterranean straits with 7,000 Berber horsemen, establishing his fortress at the Rock of Gibraltar (Jabal Tariq). At the Battle of Guadalete (711 CE), he completely routed King Roderic's Visigothic army despite heavy numerical odds.
