Archival Overview

Last Nubian Pharaoh of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty of Egypt who marched north from Napata to reclaim Memphis from the Assyrian Empire in 664 BCE, immortalized in the Dream Stele.

Biographical Record

Nephew of Pharaoh Taharqa, Tantamani ascended the dual throne of Kush and Egypt in Napata. Inspired by a divine dream of two serpents, recorded on his famous Dream Stele at Jebel Barkal, he launched an expedition down the Nile in 664 BCE.

He reconquered Memphis and slew Necho I, the Assyrian vassal ruler, before King Ashurbanipal of Assyria launched a massive counter-offensive that sacked Thebes. Tantamani retreated to Upper Egypt and Nubia, where he ruled peacefully until his death.
