Archival Overview

Turco-Mongol conqueror and founder of the Timurid Empire who never lost a battle across forty years of campaigns from Delhi to the Mediterranean, transforming Samarkand into a Renaissance jewel.

Biographical Record

Born to a Barlas clan chieftain, Timur the Lame (1336–1405) was wounded in the leg and hand while raiding sheep as a youth. Through ferocious military genius, he united the western Chagatai Khanate, styled himself 'Amir', and married a Genghisid princess to claim the title 'Gurgani' (Son-in-Law).

Timur routed the Golden Horde under Tokhtamysh, sacked Delhi in 1398, defeated the Mamluk Sultanate in Syria, and captured Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I at the Battle of Ankara in 1402. He deported tens of thousands of master architects and craftsmen to build the turquoise-domed mosques and madrasas of Samarkand.
