Archival Overview
Revered pioneer of modern Kabyle folk music, who spent decades as an immigrant factory worker in France singing the struggles and dignity of Algerian emigrants.
Biographical Record
Taleb Rabah was born in the mountain village of Tizit in the high Djurdjura. Emigrating to France in the 1950s to work in the coal mines of Alsace and automobile factories of Paris, he taught himself the lute and wrote poignant songs chronicling the pain of exile ('Lghorba') and homesickness.
Returning permanently to his native village after independence, he recorded dozens of landmark albums featuring acoustic instruments and profound moral lyrics. His monumental anthem 'Itebrijen' (The Pigeons) is cherished as an immortal classic of Algerian folk song.
