Archival Overview
Distinguished Egyptian expressionist painter who won the prestigious Guggenheim International Award in 1958, celebrated for her deeply empathetic, earth-toned canvases depicting the ancient folklore, boats, and women of Nubia.
Biographical Record
Raised inside the royal palaces where her father served as laureate officer, Halim studied art in Cairo and at the Académie Julian in Paris. In the 1960s, prior to the flooding of Nubia by the Aswan High Dam, she traveled south to document disappearing Nubian village life.
Her work, characterized by thick impasto, warm ochre tones, and spiritual serenity, captured the timeless dialogue between the Egyptian peasant and the sacred Nile. In 1996, she received the Egyptian State Appreciation Award for the Arts.
