Archival Overview
Eminent Algerian Arabic novelist and intellectual whose iconic works 'The Earthquake' and 'The Fisherman and the Palace' dissected social transformations, while his cultural association Al-Jahidhiya nurtured writers.
Biographical Record
Tahar Ouettar was born into a Berber peasant family in eastern Algeria and studied at the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulema schools and the Zaytuna in Tunis. He joined the FLN in 1956, writing revolutionary prose and journalism.
His 1974 masterpiece 'Al-Zilzal' (The Earthquake) captured the psychological shock of the feudal class facing national land reforms. Ouettar founded 'Al-Jahidhiya', one of the most vibrant independent literary salons in the Arab world, which boldly defended freedom of thought throughout the dark trials of the 1990s.
