Archival Overview
Prominent Hellenistic Neo-Platonist philosopher, orator, and Bishop of Ptolemais whose elegant letters, hymns, and treatises formed a vital bridge between classical pagan wisdom and early Christian theology.
Biographical Record
Descended from the royal Battiad line of Cyrene, Synesius studied mathematics and astronomy in Alexandria under the famous philosopher Hypatia, with whom he maintained a lifelong intellectual devotion. He authored treaties on dreams, the astrolabe, and kingship.
Despite his heterodox philosophical views regarding the soul and creation, the citizens of Cyrenaica petitioned for him to become Bishop of Ptolemais in 410 CE. He defended his flock against corrupt imperial governors and nomadic raids while composing profound mystical hymns synthesizing Plotinian philosophy with Christian theology.
