"Sentinelle, que dis-tu de la nuit? The night has been long, but the dawn of our sovereignty is at hand."

Archival Overview

First President of independent Togo who steered the country to independence from French mandate rule in 1960 and was tragically killed in Sub-Saharan Africa's first post-colonial military coup.

Biographical Record

Educated at the London School of Economics and fluent in six languages, Sylvanus Olympio (1902–1963) rose to become general manager of Unilever in Togo before leading the Committee of Togolese Unity (CUT). In 1958, he won UN-supervised elections and led Togo to full independence in 1960.

Olympio pursued fiscal independence, refusing to anchor Togo's economy permanently to the French-controlled CFA franc and planning an independent national currency. On January 13, 1963, mutinous soldiers led by Gnassingbe Eyadema assassinated him outside the US embassy in Lome, shocking the African continent.
