Archival Overview

Eminent Jewish-Algerian violinist who was the primary solo instrumentalist in the legendary orchestra of Cheikh Raymond in Constantine.

Biographical Record

Sylvain Ghrenassia was an iconic violinist born in Constantine. Possessing an unmatched ear for the subtle microtones and modal shifts of Andalusian Malouf, he was chosen by Cheikh Raymond Leyris to serve as principal first violinist in his famous orchestra.

For over two decades, Ghrenassia's expressive violin playing underpinned Raymond's recordings and weekly concerts on national radio. He was also the father and first musical mentor of Gaston Ghrenassia, who would later gain worldwide fame under the pseudonym Enrico Macias.
