Archival Overview
Brilliant Swedish mechanical engineer who invented the multi-row self-aligning ball bearing in 1907 and founded SKF, the world's largest rolling bearing manufacturer.
Biographical Record
Sven Gustaf Wingquist was born on December 10, 1876, in Kumla, Närke. After graduating from the technical school in Örebro and working in textile mills in the United States and Sweden, he became operating engineer at Gamlestadens Fabriker in Gothenburg in 1899.
Frustrated by frequent axle breakdowns and transmission shaft misalignments caused by soft clay foundations, Wingquist conceived a revolutionary solution: a multi-row self-aligning ball bearing with a spherical outer raceway that automatically compensated for angular shaft misalignments. Patented in 1907, his invention enabled the founding of Svenska Kullagerfabriken (SKF). Under Wingquist's leadership as CEO and board chairman, SKF became a global industrial giant, later spawning Volvo as an automotive subsidiary in 1927.
