Archival Overview

Mighty king of the Khmer Empire who reunified Cambodia and constructed Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world.

Biographical Record

Suryavarman II (posthumous name Paramavishnuloka; reigned 1113–c. 1150 AD) was one of the greatest warrior-kings and builders of the Khmer Empire. Seizing the throne after overcoming rival claimants, he reunified the fractured kingdom and extended Khmer imperial authority across modern Thailand, southern Laos, and the Malay Peninsula, while launching expeditions against Champa and Dai Viet.

Suryavarman's crowning achievement was the design and construction of Angkor Wat, an architectural marvel dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, breaking with the Saivite tradition of earlier kings. Conceived as both a state temple and his personal funerary complex, Angkor Wat stands as the zenith of classical Khmer temple architecture and astronomy.
