Biographical Record
Surya Sen was a beloved schoolteacher in Chittagong (now in Bangladesh) who led the local revolutionary group of the Indian Republican Army. Convinced that spectacular armed actions could awaken India's youth, he trained dozens of young men and women in paramilitary combat.
On April 18, 1930, Sen led sixty-five young revolutionaries in capturing the British police and auxiliary armories in Chittagong, cutting telegraph lines and hoisting the national flag. He commanded the Battle of Jalalabad Hills before being captured in 1933, brutally tortured, and executed.
