Archival Overview
The last sovereign Sultan of the Keira Sultanate of Darfur who restored his kingdom's independence in 1898, ruling for eighteen years before dying in battle against British imperial forces during WWI.
Biographical Record
Ali Dinar was a prince of the Keira dynasty that had ruled the Sultanate of Darfur for four centuries. Following the collapse of the Mahdist state at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, Ali Dinar seized his ancestral throne in El Fasher, restoring an independent, prosperous Islamic state.
Ali Dinar built the opulent Sultan's Palace in El Fasher, established modern arms workshops, and annually sent the sacred ceremonial Kiswa (embroidered cloth) to the Kaaba in Mecca. In 1915, he allied with the Ottoman Empire against Britain during World War I; British forces invaded Darfur in 1916, and the Sultan died heroically in battle on November 6, 1916.
