Archival Overview

Third Sultan of Mataram who unified central and eastern Java, laid siege to Dutch Batavia twice in 1628 and 1629, created the Javanese calendar, and constructed the royal necropolis of Imogiri.

Biographical Record

Raden Mas Jatmika (Sultan Agung, 1593–1645) transformed Mataram into the dominant empire of Java, conquering the rich northern coastal port cities of Tuban, Madura, and Surabaya. In 1641, he received the title of Sultan from the Grand Sharif of Mecca.

Recognizing the growing threat of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), Sultan Agung mobilized tens of thousands of Javanese soldiers to besiege Dutch Batavia in 1628 and 1629. In 1633, he combined the Islamic lunar calendar with the Hindu Saka calendar to create the unique Javanese calendar. He constructed the royal necropolis at Imogiri.
