Biographical Record

Suleiman al-Barouni (c. 1872–1940) studied at Al-Zaytouna in Tunis and Al-Azhar in Cairo, establishing the progressive printing press Al-Azhar al-Baruniyya. Elected to the Ottoman Parliament as deputy for the Nafusa Mountains in 1908, he returned to Libya in 1911 to organize armed Amazigh resistance against Italian invasion.

Barouni was a key intellectual visionary behind the 1918 Tripolitanian Republic, serving on its four-man collective presidency and advocating for national unity between Arab and Amazigh tribes. Exiled by Italian authorities in 1921, he traveled across the Muslim world, publishing historical treatises and defending Islamic modernist thought.
