Archival Overview
Eminent 17th-century Hanafi jurist and Grand Mufti of Tunis who codified the application of Ottoman Hanafi imperial law alongside native Maliki customary law in the courts of Tunis.
Biographical Record
Sulayman al-Hanafi served as chief professor at the Youssef Dey Madrasa and supreme Hanafi jurisconsult to the Muradid Beys. In a society where the Ottoman ruling elite followed the Hanafi school while the indigenous population adhered to the Maliki school, Sulayman was celebrated for his judicial harmony.
His legal treatises established stable procedural protocols ensuring that citizens could plead their cases under whichever legal school protected their contractual equity, preventing sectarian legal friction.
