Archival Overview
Song Dynasty Prime Minister and engineer who designed the 40-foot water-driven astronomical clock tower of Kaifeng, featuring the world's earliest mechanical escapement and endless power-transmitting chain drive.
Biographical Record
Su Song (1020–1101 CE) was an eminent scholar-statesman who rose to Prime Minister (*Zai-xiang*) under Emperor Zhezong of the Northern Song. Between 1088 and 1092, he directed the construction of a colossal 40-foot hydraulic clock tower in the imperial capital of Kaifeng.
Known as the 'Water-Powered Spherical Birds-Eye-View Observatory', the tower featured an escapement mechanism that regulated time centuries before European mechanical clocks, an endless power-transmitting chain drive, a mechanical armillary sphere, and robotic mannequins that rang bells and sounded gongs on the hour. His illustrated treatise Xinyi Xiangfa Yao accurately preserved the engineering blueprints and mapped 1,464 stars on five celestial charts.
