Biographical Record
Su Shi passed the imperial civil service exams at nineteen with top honors. Throughout his administrative career, he served as a benevolent magistrate in Hangzhou—where he oversaw the construction of the famous Su Causeway across West Lake—while repeatedly suffering political exile due to his independent stance during the New Policies debate.
Su Shi liberated the Ci poetry genre from delicate domestic romance into heroic, philosophical expression, as immortalized in his 'First Ode on the Red Cliffs' and 'Prelude to Water Melody'. His unshakeable good humor, resilience, and culinary inventions remain universally beloved in East Asia.
