Sir Stirling Moss (1929–2020) was an English racing virtuoso whose name became an international synonym for speed. Over an illustrious career spanning 529 races, Moss won 212 events across Formula One, sports cars, and rallying, finishing runner-up in the F1 World Championship four times (1955–1958).
His victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR—completing 992 miles of open Italian roads in 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds at an average speed of 98.53 mph—remains the greatest single road race drive ever performed.
