Archival Overview
Great master of Flemish naturalist prose, nephew of Guido Gezelle, whose iconic novel De vlaschaard (The Flax Field, 1907) elevated the rural struggle of Flemish peasants into a mythic cosmic tragedy.
Biographical Record
Working as a village baker in Avelgem until age thirty-four, Lateur wrote under the pseudonym Stijn Streuvels. In 1905, he built his beloved thatched home 'Het Lijsternest' in Ingooigem, dedicating his long life entirely to literature.
His masterpieces De vlaschaard (1907), Langs de wegen (1902), and De teleurgang van den Waterhoek (1927) depicted the primeval bonds between man, soil, and the changing seasons with fatalistic majesty. He was nominated multiple times for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
