Archival Overview
American rock musician and founding lead vocalist of Smash Mouth whose raspy, upbeat delivery powered late-1990s pop-rock mega-hits "Walkin' on the Sun" and "All Star", the latter immortalized as the opening theme of Shrek.
Biographical Record
Steven Scott Harwell was born in Santa Clara, California. After early stints performing in rap groups, he co-founded the alternative rock band Smash Mouth in San Jose in 1994. With Harwell's gravelly baritone, retro-organ riffs, and surf-punk energy, Smash Mouth scored an instant commercial hit with their 1997 debut single "Walkin' on the Sun."
In 1999, the band released their sophomore album Astro Lounge, anchored by the lead track "All Star." The song became a multi-platinum global anthem, nominated for a Grammy Award. When featured as the opening musical sequence in the 2001 animated blockbuster Shrek, alongside their cover of The Monkees' "I'm a Believer," Harwell's voice became indelibly embedded in millenial popular culture and digital folklore, generating billions of streams worldwide. Harwell retired from touring in 2021 due to heart cardiomyopathy and liver disease.
