Cancer survivor who lost his leg to bone cancer and completed the historic 7,924-kilometer "Journey for Lives" cross-Canada run in 1985, raising $13 million.

Biographical Record

Stephen Charles Fonyo Jr. lost his left leg to osteosarcoma (bone cancer) at age twelve. Inspired by Terry Fox's legendary Marathon of Hope, Fonyo resolved to run across the entire continent on his artificial leg to raise funds for cancer research.

Setting out from St. John's, Newfoundland on March 31, 1984, the eighteen-year-old Fonyo ran across ten provinces over 425 days, completing the 7,924-kilometer trek at Mile 0 in Victoria, British Columbia on May 29, 1985. His "Journey for Lives" raised over $13 million for cancer research and inspired millions across Canada.
