Archival Overview

Canada's most celebrated literary humorist and political economist at McGill University, whose 1912 masterpiece Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town lovingly immortalized small-town Canadian life.

Biographical Record

Educated at the University of Toronto and the University of Chicago, Leacock served as chair of the Department of Economics and Political Science at McGill University for thirty years, publishing serious academic treatises alongside his humorous stories.

Between 1910 and 1925, Leacock was the most widely read humorist in the English-speaking world, revered for Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town (based on Orillia, Ontario) and Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich. The annual Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour commemorates his legacy.
