Foremost poet of the Icelandic diaspora known as 'The Sleepless Poet' (Klettafjallaskáldið) who homesteaded in Alberta, Canada, and penned the monumental six-volume poetic cycle Andvökur.
Biographical Record
Stefán Guðmundur Guðmundsson was born on October 3, 1853, in Skagafjörður, Iceland. With no formal schooling, he emigrated with his family to North America in 1873, pioneering homesteads in Wisconsin and North Dakota before settling permanently near Markerville, Alberta, Canada, in 1889.
Enduring brutal agricultural toil by day, Stephansson suffered from lifelong insomnia, composing complex philosophical and political poetry late into the night in classical Icelandic meter. His monumental six-volume collection Andvökur (Sleepless Nights) attacked capitalist exploitation, war, and religious dogma, while celebrating the Canadian prairie. His historic homestead in Markerville is preserved as a Provincial Historic Site.
