Biographical Record
Largely self-taught, Stefan Banach (1892–1945) was discovered discussing mathematics on a park bench by Hugo Steinhaus. He became the intellectual leader of the Lwow School of Mathematics, convening legendary problem-solving sessions at the Scottish Cafe.
In 1932, Banach published 'Theorie des Operations Lineaires', formalizing functional analysis into a coherent discipline. His name is permanently attached to fundamental mathematical theorems: the Banach-Tarski paradox, Hahn-Banach theorem, and Banach fixed-point theorem.
