Archival Overview
Master Danish writer and country parson who pioneered the Danish novella with Trækfuglene and The Diary of a Parish Clerk, celebrating the bleak beauty of Jutland's moors.
Biographical Record
Steen Steensen Blicher was born on October 11, 1782, in Vium parsonage, Jutland. Serving as a country pastor in Thorning and Spentrup, he was an enthusiastic hunter who roamed the wild, uncultivated heather moors of central Jutland, listening to the tales of gypsies, farmers, and poachers.
Blicher introduced psychological realism and unreliable first-person narrators to Danish literature with masterpieces such as Brudstykker af en Landsbydegns Dagbog (The Diary of a Parish Clerk, 1824) and Præsten i Vejlbye (The Parson of Vejlbye, 1829), one of the earliest courtroom mystery novellas in world literature. His bird-poem collection Trækfuglene (Birds of Passage) remains a pinnacle of Danish nature lyricism.
