Biographical Record
Stanislaw Ulam (1909–1984) was a brilliant member of the famed Scottish Book mathematical circle in Lwow. Immigrating to the United States before the outbreak of World War II, he joined the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos.
While convalescing from encephalitis in 1946, Ulam conceived the Monte Carlo method using random number sampling to solve intractable physical and mathematical problems on early digital computers. In 1951, he conceived the staged hydrodynamic implosion mechanism that made practical fusion energy devices possible.
