Biographical Record
Stanislaw Moniuszko was born on May 5, 1819, in Ubiel near Minsk. Living in Minsk and later working for two decades as organist at Saint John's Church in Vilnius, Moniuszko was deeply steeped in the folk melodies, seasonal rituals, and peasant lore of the Belarusian countryside.
Collaborating with Belarusian playwright Vintsent Dunin-Martsinkyevich, he composed The Peasant Woman (Sielanka, 1852), the first musical theater piece featuring dialogue and songs in modern Belarusian. In 1858, his tragic masterpiece Halka premiered in Warsaw, followed by The Haunted Manor (Straszny Dwór), cementing his status as the foundational master of Slavic national opera.
