"Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage, to find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea."

Archival Overview

Towering folk bard with a booming baritone whose seafaring sea shanties and ballads—notably Barrett's Privateers and Northwest Passage (Canada's unofficial national anthem)—became indelible folk classics.

Biographical Record

Though born in Ontario, Rogers spent childhood summers in Canso, Nova Scotia, absorbing maritime seafaring history. Performing with his brother Garnet, his magnificent baritone voice and rich historical narratives revitalized Canadian folk music in the 1970s on albums like Fogarty's Cove.

His a cappella maritime shanty Barrett's Privateers and soaring acoustic epic Northwest Passage captured the rugged soul of Canadian exploration and labor. Rogers died heroically at age thirty-three helping fellow passengers evacuate the smoke-filled cabin of Air Canada Flight 797 in Cincinnati, his ashes scattered off Halifax.
