Biographical Record
Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887–1920) grew up in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. With almost no formal training in pure mathematics, Ramanujan developed thousands of astonishing theorems in solitude. In 1913, he sent a letter containing over 100 theorems to English mathematician G. H. Hardy at Trinity College, Cambridge.
Hardy immediately recognized his transcendent genius, bringing him to Cambridge. Ramanujan compiled notebooks containing nearly 3,900 identities, including asymptotic formulas for integer partitions, rapidly converging series for π, and mock theta functions that today find profound applications in black hole thermodynamics and string theory.
