Archival Overview
Escaped Campanian slave of immense physical courage and rhetorical power who co-led the rebel army against Carthage, trapped by Hamilcar Barca at the Battle of 'The Saw' and crucified.
Biographical Record
Spendius was an escaped slave from Campania who enlisted in the Carthaginian army in Sicily. Possessing extraordinary physical strength, daring, and multilingual eloquence, he knew that if the mercenaries made peace with Carthage, he would be returned to Rome to be tortured and crucified under Roman slave laws.
He incited the mercenaries to total intransigence, stoning anyone who spoke of compromise. In 238 BC, Hamilcar Barca trapped Spendius and 40,000 rebels in the canyon known as 'The Saw' (Prion). Forced by starvation to surrender, Spendius was taken to the walls of Tunis and crucified in full view of Mathos's garrison.
