Archival Overview
Foremost Norwegian mathematician who created the theory of continuous symmetry and formulated Lie groups and Lie algebras, foundational to modern physics and quantum mechanics.
Biographical Record
Marius Sophus Lie was born on December 17, 1842, in Nordfjordeid. After completing his studies at the University of Christiania, he traveled to Berlin and Paris in 1869–1870, where he forged a close intellectual friendship with Felix Klein and immersed himself in differential geometry.
Lie conceived the revolutionary idea of investigating differential equations through continuous transformation groups, creating what are now universally known as Lie groups and Lie algebras. He held prestigious professorships at Christiania and Leipzig, publishing his monumental three-volume treatise Theorie der Transformationsgruppen. His mathematical framework became indispensable to twentieth-century theoretical physics, from Einstein's general relativity to the Standard Model of particle physics.
