Sophie Taeuber-Arp was one of the most innovative and versatile avant-garde artists of the early 20th century. Trained in applied arts and modern dance with Rudolf von Laban, she was an indispensable force in Zurich Dada, performing at Cabaret Voltaire and creating revolutionary wooden Dada marionettes and turned-wood 'Dada Heads.'

As a professor at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, Taeuber-Arp championed geometric abstraction years ahead of De Stijl. Her radical interior designs for the Aubette entertainment complex in Strasbourg (1926–1928, with Hans Arp and Theo van Doesburg) epitomized the synthesis of abstract painting and architecture.
