"Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go... What does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action? / Stand up for what you believe in even if you are standing alone."

Archival Overview

German student and anti-Nazi resistance fighter who co-led the nonviolent intellectual resistance group 'The White Rose' (Weiße Rose), executed by guillotine at age 21 after distributing anti-war leaflets at the University of Munich.

Biographical Record

Sophia Magdalena Scholl (1921 – 1943) was a German university student whose moral clarity made her a universal symbol of youth resistance against tyranny. Initially disillusioned by the Hitler Youth, she arrived at the University of Munich in 1942 to study biology and philosophy.

Alongside her brother Hans and friends, Sophie formed the *Weiße Rose* (White Rose), printing and secretly distributing six leaflets that denounced Hitler's totalitarianism, exposed the extermination of Jews in Poland, and called for passive resistance and democratic renewal. On February 18, 1943, while dropping leaflets from the atrium balcony of the university's main hall, she was caught by a custodian and arrested by the Gestapo. Tried by Nazi People's Court president Roland Freisler, Sophie displayed unflinching dignity and was executed by guillotine that afternoon.
