Biographical Record
Solomon was an officer of Mesopotamian origin who accompanied Belisarius in the 533 AD reconquest of Carthage from the Vandals. Appointed Praetorian Prefect and supreme commander in Africa by Justinian, Solomon conducted energetic military campaigns to secure the province from the Aures to the Gulf of Gabes.
He was the master builder of Byzantine North Africa, erecting massive stone fortifications and walled citadels that still stand across Tunisia at Ammaedara (Haïdra), Sufetula (Sbeitla), and Thelepte. In 544 AD, he was defeated and killed in battle at Cillium (Kasserine) by a unified Berber army led by Antalas.
