Sobhuza II was proclaimed Paramount Chief (Ngwenyama) at only four months old following the sudden death of King Bhunu, while his grandmother Labotsibeni Mdluli acted as regent. Reaching adulthood in 1921, Sobhuza led delegations to London to litigate against colonial land partitions, fighting tirelessly for Swazi customary land rights.
Sobhuza skillfully navigated the transition from colonial status to complete sovereign independence in 1968. Combining traditional tribal consultative institutions (Tinkhundla) with modern mineral and agricultural development, he preserved national stability and cultural heritage amidst regional turbulence.
