Sneferu (Snofru)

Sneferu was the founding Pharaoh of the illustrious Fourth Dynasty of Egypt, reigning for over three decades during a golden age of Old Kingdom peace, prosperity, and architectural innovation. Remembered in Egyptian folklore as an exceptionally beneficent and accessible sovereign—hailed in Middle Kingdom literature as 'the gracious king'—Sneferu established trading networks with Lebanon for cedarwood and secured the turquoise mines of Sinai.

Sneferu was the most prolific pyramid builder in human history, moving more limestone than any Pharaoh before or after, including his son Khufu. Experimenting to transition from stepped pyramids to smooth-faced pyramids, he oversaw the completion of the Meidum Pyramid, the transitional rhomboidal Bent Pyramid at Dahshur (whose angle was shifted mid-construction to prevent collapse), and finally the Red Pyramid of Dahshur. The Red Pyramid was humanity's very first successful, true smooth-sided pyramid, serving as the direct architectural blueprint for the Great Pyramid of Giza.
