Biographical Record
Dr. Slimane Ben Slimane studied ophthalmology in Paris, returning to Tunis where he offered free medical clinics to the impoverished while rising to the leadership of the Neo-Destour. Along with Bourguiba, he was imprisoned by colonial authorities in 1938 and interned in French military prisons across the Sahara.
An ardent progressive and anti-imperialist, he led the World Peace Council in Tunisia and defended civil liberties and non-alignment, leaving memoirs that serve as fundamental documents of the national liberation struggle.
