Archival Overview

Pioneering Ghanaian Northern activist, journalist, and nationalist editor who campaigned for the integration of the Northern Territories and civil rights.

Biographical Record

Salifu Kwadwo Bawa was born on April 12, 1905, in Tamale, Northern Region. At a time when formal Western education was heavily restricted in the Northern Territories by the British protectorate administration, Bawa fought for educational rights, becoming one of the earliest northern intellectuals to publish extensively in the national press.

He championed northern representation in the Gold Coast Legislative Council, editing nationalist columns and organizing literacy drives among railway and urban workers. His tireless advocacy ensured that the Northern Territories joined with the southern colony and Ashanti in a unified independent Ghana in 1957.
