Biographical Record

The son of an Indian indentured sugar laborer, Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (1900–1985) studied medicine at University College London, where he met Mahatma Gandhi and joined the Fabian Society. Returning to Mauritius, he became leader of the Mauritius Labour Party in 1940.

Ramgoolam championed universal adult suffrage in 1958 and negotiated national independence from Britain in 1968. He established free universal education through the university level, comprehensive state healthcare, and social security, laying the foundations for Mauritius's transformation into Africa's most prosperous democracy.
