Archival Overview
Legendary Mountie officer who marched across the prairies in 1874, maintained order during CPR construction, commanded the North-West Mounted Police in the Klondike Gold Rush, and led Strathcona's Horse.
Biographical Record
Steele joined the newly formed North-West Mounted Police in 1873 as its third recruit, participating in the legendary March West. When the Canadian Pacific Railway pushed through the Rocky Mountains, his iron nerve and imposing presence quelled mutinous rail strikes single-handedly.
During the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, Steele commanded the NWMP at the Chilkoot and White Passes, enforcing strict regulations that miners carry a year's food supply, preventing mass starvation and ensuring Dawson City was remarkably peaceful compared to lawless Alaskan boomtowns.
